Day 01 Fly UK to Kota Kinabalu Day 02 Arrive Kota Kinabalu & check in to Promenade Hotel. Day 03 0530hrs Pick up from your hotel and transfer to airport for flight to Lahad Datu. Arrive & proceed by vehicle (shared car) provided by Borneo Rainforest Lodge and continue on your journey into the forest. First, you enter the timber concession area where rare wild elephants can sometimes be spotted. Once you reach the dirt track road that winds its way through the forest you have a very bumpy two hour journey ahead of you before reaching the riverside lodge in time for a well deserved lunch. Situated about 85km (50 miles) from Lahad Datu is the Danum Valley an area of approx. 440 sq km of protected virgin rainforest. Due to its vast size, Sabah's largest protected area of lowland dipterocarp forest is home to some of Sabah's rarest animals and plants, including the Sumatran rhinoceros. There are over 30km (18 miles) of marked trails which can be explored at your leisure and also a tree top walkway suspended 40 metres up in the forest canopy. The resort is situated on a bend in the Danum River, the tree covered valley walls spectacularly rearing up on the far side of the water. Rhinoceros Hornbills fly through the valley, their eerie calls echoing around the magnificent jungle. It is a fantastic location for exploring Borneo's real rainforest. Night safari drive in the Danum Valley (SHARED GUIDE) This evening you will join one of the park's open safari vehicles and head out through the rain forest with your driver and guide. Using a powerful spot light the guide will point out insects, birds and mammals in the trees. You have a good chance of spotting sambar deer, giant squirrels, sleeping proboscis monkeys and other primates as well as much of the bird life. (B/L/D) Day 04 Canopy walkway and nature trail Shared excursion with your naturalist guide. A short walk from the lodge brings you to the canopy walkway. Suspended 40 metres above the forest floor, this walkway is the perfect vantage point to view some of the area’s 275 recorded species of bird. Orang-utan nests can be seen here, and if you are patient, you may see one of these enigmatic creatures swinging through the trees. Returning to the lodge, you can walk via the well marked nature trail. Discreet information boards inform you about the species of plants that thrive in this 'Borneo Eden'. Walk to Coffin Cliff and viewpoint. Shared excursion with your naturalist guide. Heading across the Danum River, you begin the steady ascent through the forest. Pausing along the way to discover the huge variety of flora and fauna - you may see chamaeleons, gibbons, and even orang-utans. Close to the summit, an empty ironwood coffin reveals the location of an ancient Kadazandusun burial site. Five minutes further, and you emerge from the dark jungle to witness a fantastic view over the whole valley. High above the treetops you will see the resort nestling in the bend of the river way below. On your return, you may wish to have a dip in the refreshing natural 'jacuzzi' pools. Here, water tumbles down a series of rock pools, ideal for cooling off after your walk. There is a small 'changing hut' here for you to use so make sure you bring swimwear with you! (B/L/D) Day 05 After breakfast, proceed to Lahad Datu BRL office. Here you complete a few formalities, change vehicle (private) & transfer to Sukau. Arrive at Lapit Jetty and onward, up-river, by boat to Bukit Melapi Lodge. Evening - You will journey up one of the smaller tributaries of the Kinabatangan River. Wildlife abounds in this part of Borneo and you will see chattering monkeys and many species of birds. If you pause for a minute or two & keep quiet, you may be lucky enough to see a wild orang utan swinging in the trees. Probocis monkeys, with their massive noses are only to be found in Borneo. Most evenings, troops of these monkeys come down to the riverbank to feed, and from your boat you have the perfect vantage point. There have been increased sightings of the rare pygmy elephant recently and your experienced guide gives you the best chance of seeing these animals. (B/L/D) Day 06 Early morning is the best time to see wildlife, so you set off at dawn by boat to see the oxbow lakes and to enjoy the rain forest at its most beautiful. The abundance of bird life here is remarkable and you may be fortunate enough to see some of Borneo's exotic animal species. If you wish, you can take a short walk through the rain forest to see what can be discovered on foot (beware of leeches!!).On your return to the lodge you will have breakfast and the time until lunch is left free. In the afternoon, there will be a trip out along the Menanggol river where you can usually spot proboscis monkeys bedding down for the night in the trees along the river banks. (B/L/D) Day 7 After breakfast, leave the jungle by boat. Arrive at the jetty & drive for approx. 30 minutes to Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation Centre. Proceed to the free roaming area feeding platform for the morning feeding at 10 am. At this centre, observe man's closest relative - the Orang Utan being rehabilitated to become wild in their natural habitat and experience a walk in the tropical lowland dipterocarp forest of Borneo. After lunch, check in to Sepilok Nature Resort. (B/L) Day 8 Free at leisure until your transfer to the airport for flight back to Kota Kinabalu. Met on arrival & transfer to Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort to check in. Days 9 & 10 At leisure at Shangri-la Rasa Ria Resort Day 11 Check out & appropriately timed transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.. |
